Meisosis

• Process of meiosis:

  • Diploid cell (has homologous pair) 1 1
  • Chromosomes copied x x
  • Divides to form 1 1 and 1 1
  • Divides to form 1 and 1 and 1 and 1
  • 4 genetically different haploid gametes
• Meiosis is important because:

  • Produces haploid gametes
  • Maintains diploid chromosome number from generation to generation
  • Increase genetic variation
• Because of crossing over/independent assortment in meiosis, why are twins genetically different?

  • Each gamete has a different combo of alleles
  • So zygote is formed from different gametes in random fertilisation
