Explain fractional distillation
Different hydrocarbons have different boiling points due to their variety in chain lengths.
Crude oil is passed into a fractionating column that is hot at the base and cooler at the top.
The mixture boils and starts to rise up, gradually condensing back to liquid form.
-Higher boiling points condense first and are tapped off near the base
-Lower boiling points condense later and are tapped off near the top
