Types of long-term memory

    Cards (4)

    • What are the three types of long-term memory?
      Episodic, semantic, procedural
    • Explain episodic long-term memory
Refers to our ability to recall events from our personal lives, containing what and where it happened and who was there
May contain emotions, and we have to make a conscious effort to recall these as they are declarative (explicit)
    • Explain semantic long-term memory
Our knowledge of the world, facts shared by everyone rather than personal knowledge. They begin as episodic memories but over time the memory loses its association with the personal experience and becomes semantic
Also, declarative memories (explicit) as they require a conscious effort to recall
    • Explain procedural long-term memory
Memory is concerned with skills. We recall these automatically with little effort
These memories are acquired through practice and repetition
As they don't require conscious thought, we can perform other cognitive tasks at the same time
      They are non-declarative memories (implicit)
