Gender Bias

• Gender Bias - the differential treatment or representation of men + women based on stereotypes rather than real differences

  -E.G. women stay at home, men work
• Alpha bias - exaggerating gender differences
• Beta bias - Ignoring or minimising the differences between male and female
• Androcentrism - Mental process of viewing the world from a male point of view
• Examples of alpha bias in gender

  -Social biological theory of relationships formation - suggests that all men have/should sleep with multiple women to ensure that their genes are passed down, suggesting that women should have children and stay loyal while men sleep with multiple different women
• Example of beta bias in gender

  -Zimbardo, Asch, Milgram have all shown androcentrism and beta bias in their experiments (using only male particpants and applying the findings to females0

  -Kohlberg's theory of moral development - assumed based on his findings (males only) that everyone would have the same moral + solutions in a dilemma
