• Old Major is the leader and very respected, he wants the animals to rebel, the animals look up to him and he is seen as wise, very experienced on the farm and the pioneer of rebellion on the farm
• Boxer is an old hardworking horse who works tirelessly on the farm, he is kind hearted and trusting, he is used by Napoleon to get rid of Snowball and later betrayed by Napoleon and sent to the glue factory where he is beaten to death
• Snowball is one of Napoleon's enemies, he was also part of the original rebellion but left due to disagreements with Napoleon about how the farm should be run, Snowball believes that education is important whereas Napoleon thinks it isn't needed
• Napoleon is the new leader who takes control once Old major dies, he is power hungry and selfish, he uses fear tactics to keep the other animals obedient and loyal to him, he has his own secret police called 'the pigs' which he uses to spy on the other animals and punish them if necessary
• Animalism is the idea that all animals are equal and deserve freedom from human oppression, this is what the animals believe at the start of the novel however their beliefs change throughout the story
• Freedom is something that the animals want, they don't want to live like slaves anymore and want to have more rights and freedoms
• Snowball is another intelligent pig who helps with the revolution but disagrees with Napoleons methods, he leaves the farm and goes into hiding, he is blamed for everything bad happening at the farm and eventually gets exiled
• Fear is a powerful tool used by Napoleon to maintain control over the animals, he makes sure everyone knows that he will kill anyone who disobeys or goes against him, he even kills some of the animals himself such as Boxer and Squealer
• Mr Jones was the previous owner of Manor Farm, he was cruel and selfish, he treated the animals badly and made them work long hours without pay or food
• The Seven Commandments were created by Old Major, these commandments state that all animals are equal and no animal shall wear clothes or sleep in beds, they are broken when Napoleon becomes the leader and starts wearing clothes and sleeping in a bed
• The Battle of Cowshed is when the animals fight against Mr Jones and win, this is the beginning of animalism and the end of human rule
• Old Major is the wise old boar who inspires the animals to rebel against Mr Jones, he gives a speech explaining why they need to revolt and tells them about animalism
• The windmill represents progress and development, it is built so that the animals can become self sufficient and not rely on humans anymore, however it becomes clear that the windmill is being built just because Napoleon wants to show off and prove that he is better than Snowball
