• A strong external locus of control is associated with the belief that what happens to an individual is determined by external factors
• These external factors include the actions of others or luck
• People with an external locus of control approach events with a more passive and fatalistic attitude
• As a result, they take less responsibility for their actions and are less likely to display independent behaviour
