  • Modals are auxiliary or helping verbs.
  • Modals are used before the main verb.
  • "Can" is used to express an ability or possibility.
  • "Might" indicates a future possibility. This also applies to "Could".
  • "Will" is used to make certain predictions in the future; as well as "Shall".
  • "Must not" and "Cannot" are used to indicate prohibition.
  • "Should" is used to recommend or suggest an action; and "Ought to" is also one.
  • "Should" and "Ought to" also expressed Moral Obligation or to do what's right.
  • "Can" is used to informally ask for permission. Whilst, "May" is used for formal writing or conversation.
  • "Must" and "Have to" indicates obligation.
  • "Shall" is used to make offers in formal contexts.
  • "Could", as well as "Might" is used to suggest actions.
  • Both "Could" and "Would" are used to politely ask for help.
