  • Lab Experiment Definition
    -Researcher has control over as many variables as possible
    -Carried out in a controlled environment (lab)
    -IV is manipulated by researcher
  • Field Experiment Definition
    -This is an experiment carried out in a 'real world' setting.
    -The IV is still manipulated by the experimenter
  • Natural Experiment Definition
    -The effect of an IV on a DV is still measured but the IV is varying naturally
    -Experimenter is just recording the effect
  • Lack of informed consent Definition

    -PPTs are not told about everything that is happening and agreement is not gained
  • Use of deception Definition

    -This is basically lying to PPTs either deliberatelt or through admission of information
  • Lack of right to withdraw from the investigation Definition
    -PPTs should be able to withdraw from the investigation whenever they wish to.
    -This includes withdrawing their results from the study at a later date.
  • Lack of Confidentiality Definition
    -All data should be confidential, all PPTs should be anonymous and unidentifiable unless prior informed consent given.
  • Failure to protect participants from physical or or psychological harm Definition
    -Includes physical and psychological harm. PPTs should be at no greater risk then in everyday life and leave in the same state that they arrived.
  • Lack of Privacy Definition
    -PPTs right to privacy must be respected because invasions of privacy might affect well-being and raise confidentiality issues.
    -Respect social and cultural variability.
    -PPTs may be unwilling to answer certain Qs
    -Observe only public behaviour in public places
