DNA

    Cards (8)

    • What is the role of DNA?
It carries genetic information and determines our inherited characteristics.
    • What is meiosis?
A form of cell division that produces four genetically different haploid cells known as gametes.
    • How does meiosis differ from mitosis?
Meiosis produces four genetically different cells with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cells.
    • What does mitosis produce?
Mitosis produces two genetically identical cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cells.
    • What happens during meiosis II?
Independent segregation of sister chromatids occurs, and each cell divides again, producing 4 haploid cells.
    • What happens during meiosis I?
Homologous chromosomes pair to form bivalents, crossing over occurs at chiasmata, and the cell divides into two.
    • What occurs during crossing over in meiosis I?
Exchange of sections of genetic material occurs at chiasmata.
    • What happens to homologous chromosomes during meiosis I?
They separate randomly, and each cell contains either a maternal or paternal copy.
