Asch study 1951
a number of participants were asked to give the number of the line which matched the displayed line. but only 1 of these people was a real participant, the rest were confederates (actors) who purposefully said the wrong answers to see the reaction of the real participant. the repetition of the study found that 37% of the real participants conformed and changed their answer to match the actors answers either believing the actors were right or not wanting to go against the group. With an ally, only 5% conform.
