Paternalism

• Paternalism is closely associated with the concept of noblesse oblige (i.e. people with status have a responsibility to others)
• Hard paternalism favours forcing people to do things with an emphasis on robust law and order policies
• Soft paternalism favours persuasion and education
• Paternalism implies that inequality of power is both natural and desirable.
