• black body = an extremely dark black absorbing 99.8% of light shone upon it meaning it is also a perfect emitter
• object getting hotter = absorbing more than it's emitting
• object getting cooler = emitting more than it's absorbing
• object staying same temperature = emitting and absorbing equal rates
• infrared radiation is emitted by every object just some less than others
