Principles of homeostasis and negative feedback

Cards (4)

  • Define homeostasis
Maintaining a constant internal environment within specific limits
  • Describe negative feedback
A change away from the set point stimulates a response which returns conditions to the set point, and the response is stopped
  • Describe positive feedback
A change away from the set point stimulates a response which takes the conditions even further from the set point and the response continues
  • Compare the nervous system with the endocrine system
    • In the nervous system communication is through action potentials where as in the endocrine system, communication is through hormones
    • In NS transmission speed is rapid through specific neurons where as in ES, transmission speed is slow through the blood, reaching all cells but only cells with complementary receptors can respond
    • In NS the effect is temporary, localised and reversible where as in ES the effect is long-lasting, widespread and irreversible
