Maintaining a constantinternal environment within specific limits
Describe negative feedback
A change away from the set point stimulates a response which returns conditions to the set point, and the response is stopped
Describe positive feedback
A change away from the set point stimulates a response which takes the conditions even further from the set point and the response continues
Compare the nervous system with the endocrine system
In the nervous system communication is through action potentials where as in the endocrine system, communication is through hormones
In NS transmission speed is rapid through specific neurons where as in ES, transmission speed is slow through the blood, reaching all cells but only cells with complementary receptors can respond
In NS the effect is temporary, localised and reversible where as in ES the effect is long-lasting, widespread and irreversible
