Tectonic Hazards

    Cards (5)

    • The Ring of Fire is an area where many volcanoes are found, including Mount Fuji.
    • In 2015, there was a major earthquake that triggered landslides on Mt Fuji.
      • destructive plate boundary process:
      • plates are moving towards each other
      • usually involves an oceanic and continental plate
      • oceanic plate subduct the continental plate when they collide because oceanic plate is denser
      • friction between the plates causes strong earthquakes
      • as the plate goes into mantle it melts forming magma and pressure of magma builds beneath the earths surface
      • magma escapes through weaknesses in the rocks and roses up through a composite volcano (violent eruptions with steam, gas and ash and maybe pyroclastic flow)
    • Volcanoes are most commonly found along destructive plate margins, but they also occur at constructive plate margins. Some are also found away from plate margins, e.g. in Hawaii.
    • The number of deaths after the first 24 hours might increase because there may not have been money to repair roads and transport systems in the area affected by the Hazard.
