Nature vs nurture debate

• Nature: Reme Descartes (1596-1650). Human characteristics are innate
• Nature: John Locke (1632-1704) - human mind is blank slate at birth, experiences shape the person
• Empiricist- person who supports the theory that all knowledge is based on experience
• Nurture as defined by Richard lerner(1986):

  • pre-natal influences- mothers physical and psychological state during pregnancy
  • post- natal experiences- social conditions a child grows up in and the culture and historical context they’re part of
