    Immune mediated reduction in the platelet count - antibodies are against the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa or ib-V-IX complex

    Bruising
    Petechial or purpuric rash
  • What are some investigations done for ITP?

    FBC
    Blood film
    Bone marrow examinations - only done if there are atypical features
  • What features would require a bone marrow examination in ITP?

    Lymph node enlargement
    Splenomegaly
    Hihg/low white cells
    Failure to respond to treatment
  • What is the management for ITP?

    Normally no treatment is needed
  • What are some mangement options if platelet count is very low?
    Oral/IV corticosteroids
    IV immunoglobulins
    Platelet transfusion (emergency)
  • What infection preceded ITP?

    Self-limiting viral infection
