Transfer of Skill

Cards (7)

  • Describe positive transfer of learning (1)
When a previously learned skill has a beneficial effect on the learning of a new skill
  • Describe bilateral transfer of learning (1)
Transfer of a skill from one side of the body to the opposing side
  • Describe proactive transfer of learning (1)
Previously learned skill impacts on the learning of a new skill
  • Suggest how positive and negative transfer of skills can occur in training (6)
    Positive transfer:
    - Catching a ball in rounders then in cricket
    - Increased by making sure the performer understands the similarities to replicate movement for new skill

    Negative transfer:
    - Batting in softball vs baseball as softball is thrown underarm and rises possibly causing wrong timing in swing of bat
    - Can be minimised by making sure athlete is aware of differences
  • Using sporting examples, summarise characteristics of open and closed skills (6)
    Open skill:
    - Predominantly externally paced e.g. team games/racket sports
    - Subject to environmental conditions
    - Often involve influence of other performers
    - Perceptual and require changing movement patterns

    Closed skill:
    - Internally paces skills such as tennis serves
    - Under control of individual
    - Predominantly habitual movement patterns
  • Describe how you could dissect a motor skill for the analysis of technique (3)
Preparation: identification of technical detail to build leading into execution
Execution: allow the undertaking of the skill leading to recovery
Recovery: allows completion and follow through to the next action
  • Outline four types of transfer of learning (4)
Positive: Learnt skill positively impacts the learning of another skill
Negative: Learnt skill negatively impacts the learning of another skill
Retroactive: New skill learnt impacts old skill
Proactive: Previously learnt skill impacts new skill
Bilateral: Skill transfers from one side of body to the other
Zero: Skill learnt has no impact on another skill
