    Residents are given funding to work together to improve the areas of Dharavi they feel is needed most.
    It costs less money because people do much of the work themselves meaning everyone can stay in Dharavi. Meaning thousands of businesses can continue which brings the community together because they need to discuss the improvements.

    New city that was built on the outskirts of Mumbai to reduce overcrowding.
    People were able to move out of Dharavi into the newly built city. It was built on purpose and planned out so there were green spaces and provided a better living environment. Not everyone wanted to move away from Dharavi.

    • providing good access to countryside- people who live in the suburbs may choose to live there so they can have easy access to both, city and countryside.

    On outskirts of town away from congestion of the CBD. Main roads for access for employees and deliveries. On flat land with open space. The land is cheaper so low density. Land with trees and shrub. Large car parks for workers and delivery lorries.

    Inner city- close to the CBD, Grid iron street pattern, Roads leading to CBD, old transport railways, evidence of old industrial buildings/work, still many churches with little space.

    Suburbs(New)- located on edge of the city, often schools and facilities for families, modern pattern for crescents and cul-de-sacs, more open of green space, main roads around the housing developments instead of through them.

    • Flat land- cheaper and easy to build on, but other any bodies of water as flat might mean the site could be easily flooded.
    • Labour- housing estate nearby can supply a workforce.
    • Accessibility- roads/easily deliver goods and services. are the roads big enough to sustain.
    • Market- A large city nearby could cupola a lot of customers.
    • Environment- cheaper than the CBD it is affected by noice of air pollution.
    • room to expand- room for expansion and out of door recreation.
  • recent developments in the inner city
    • High density buildings and lack of open space - when the housing was built it was to ensure high volume of factory workers lived close to their work so no space was wasted In gardens/ parks.
    • Grid iron street pattern- houses were built so close together as they could, this street pattern allowed for this.
    • Poor quality housing- buildings were not well maintained as there was a large number of people living in them- some tenements have recently been modernised.
    • High levels of unemployment- nothing replaces the business that had provided so many jobs.
    • Derelict land- areas of land previously used for industry have not been rebuilt or reused nobody has looked after them.
