  • The august 1949 election: CDU and CSU(Christian democrat union and Christian social union) won 139 seats, free democratic party (FDP) had 52 and DP (German party) had 17
  • Konrad Adenauer: catholic member of centre party during Weimar, arrested for resisting Nazi's multiple times
  • constitution: Bundersrat (upper chamber), Bundestag (lower chamber), proportional representation, all fleeing GDR could settle in FRG, any non-democratic party banned, KDP banned 1956
  • 'Persil certificates' this is what people claim Adenauer did as he did not do enough to punish the Nazi's
  • The SPD was hostile to Adenauer's approach and lost for the third year in a row in 1957 however after reaching their audience of middle class, they managed to gain votes over the next 10 years
