• NATO:

  • West wanted to form formal military alliance to protect from USSR
  • Agreed that if any member was attacked, all members of NATO would come assist
  • Since end of WW2, American influence in West grew
  • Military alliance was step further than Truman Doctrine
  • NATO made American presence in Europe through Cold War
• Warsaw Pact:

  • USSR formed Pact as West Germany joined NATO - increased fear
  • West was powerful Germany on border of USSR, and controlled West Europe
  • Eastern Bloc were countries in Pact
  • Leadership of Warsaw Pact was under USSR
