    • Both sides realised weapons could destroy world
    • Both agreed to "mutually assured destruction" - deterrent from using weapons
  • New leaders:
    • Eisenhower elected in 1953: wanted to improve relations between superpowers, strongly anti-communist
    • Krushchev elected in 1956: openly criticised Stalin policies, believed in co-existence, destalinisation
  • Geneva Summit:
    • Made progress with destalinisation
    • Ended when FDR joined NATO
