  • promote specific groups within society
  • e.g. CBI, trade unions, BMA
  • usually insider groups due to the important role they tend to play in society
  • take the Parliamentary route to change, either direct lobbying or APPGs
  • these groups are self-interested
  • have to have a formal membership, so their eligibility is dependent on occupation
  • prioritise direct links with decision-makers over positive publicity
  • can be critical to the economy/provide key services
  • often have the funds to make financial grants to political parties to find favour for their cause e.g. trade unions and Labour
