Test for chlorine
-Test with
blue
litmus paper
-If it comes into contact with chlorine ,it becomes
bleached
-This may turn
red
beforehand as a solution of chlorine is
acidic
.
Test for oxygen
-Put a
glowing
splint in a tube that contains oxygen
-If oxygen is present, it will
relight
the glowing splint.
Test for carbon dioxide
-Mix the solution with
limewater
(calcium hydroxide)
-If CO2 is present, the new solution turns
cloudy.
Test for hydrogen
-Put a
burning
splint in a tube that may contain hydrogen
-If there is a
popping/squeaking
sound, hydrogen is present.
-This sound cones from the hydrogen reacting quickly with the
oxygen
in the air to form water.
Rf value equation
Rf=
distance
travelled by substance/distance travelled by
solvent
What is the Rf value in a chromatogram?
The ratio between the distance travelled by the
solute
and the distance travelled by the
solvent
