Eyes
Ears
Mouth
Teeth
Nose
How should the eyes appear
Bright
Clear
Free of discharge
How should the ears appear

In good condition, in normal colour and no abnormal smells
How should the skin/fur/feathers/scales appear
Glossy or shiny
Fur should be unmatted
No visible sores or broken skin

Gums or tongue
What does a white mucous membrane mean?
Animal is in shock
Low count of red blood cells
What does a pink mucous membrane mean
The animal is in good health
What does a red mucous membrane mean?
Sign of infection or heat stroke
What does a blue mucous membrane mean?
Low oxygen content in the blood
What does a yellow mucous membrane mean?
There may be liver or kidney failure

Moving freely
All limbs being used equally
No swelling
Feet or hooves in good condition
Claws in good condition, not twisted or too long
How should the genitals and anal area appear?
Without discharge or unusual smells
