multi store model of memory

Cards (7)

  • sensory register
Place where information is held at each of the senses - eyes, ears, nose, tongue etc. - capacity is very large
  • Attention
If a person's attention is focused on one of the sensory stores then data can be transferred to STM.
Attention is first in remembering something.
  • STM
Information held can be used for immediate tasks such as remembering directions to your house
  • Maintenance retrieval
Repetition keeps information in STM but eventually such repetition can create LTM
  • Retrieval
Process of getting information from LTM involves the information passing back through STM.
It is then available for use.
  • LTM
Potentially unlimited in duration and capacity
  • outline the multi-store model of memory (6 marks)
environmental stimuli is passed to the sensory register. this is where info is held at each of the senses such as the eyes, ears, nose etc. info is passed into STM by attention, if attention is focused on the sensory register, it will then pass onto STM -has limited capacity and lasts 18-30 seconds. if a person has no attention then the info is decayed. from STM info is passed onto LTM with rehearsal - permanent memory store and has unlimited capacity. if you practice rehearsal then info can be eventually permanently stored in the LTM.
