Expt design

Cards (6)

  • Repeated measures- each participant tested in all conditions
  • Repeated measures- pros, can compare the same participant in each condition, don't need many participants, will be no difference between groups (all the same)
  • Independent groups- each participant tested in one condition allocated randomly
  • Independent groups- pros, no order effect. Cons, researchers are comparing different participants in each condition. Any differences between the two conditions may be due to the fact participants have changed
  • Matched pairs- pairs of participants are matched on key variables e.g. age, gender etc. one person from each pair is placed into each group.
  • Matched pairs- pros, any differences between tow conditions less likely to be due to the fact that the participants have changed. Cons, very time consuming to match participants on key variables, may not control all participant variables because you can only match on key variables known to be relevant but it could be that others are important
