xylem

• the function of the xylem is to transport water and dissolved mineral ions from the roots to the leaves
• water is used for photosynthesis and to support the plant by keeping cells turgid and cooling the plant by evaporation
• minerals are used for healthy growth (eg nitrates for amino acids)
• e xylem is adapted by being made of hollow tubes strengthened by lignin and also mature xylem cells are dead so the cell contents dont interfere with the movement of water
