  • the phloem function is to transport sugars produced in photosynthesis to the rest of the plant
  • this is called translocation and it is transported to: growing shoots and roots to provide energy for new cells and to storage organs eg tubers converted to starch as an energy store for winter
  • it is adapted as it is a living tissue as translocation requires energy and also the cell sap moves from one phloem cell to the next through pores in the end walls
