Rising Sea Levels

• Due to the melting of polar ice caps and glaciers, as well as the expansion of warmer sea water, sea levels rose by abut 15cm during the 20th century
• When the temperature of sea water rises, the water expands and increases in volume
• It is predicted that sea levels could rise by up to 59cm during the 21st century, threatening coastal communities, wetlands and coral reefs with extinction
