P. Edwards: Symbols do not convey factual information and are therefore meaningless. They cannot be verified using sense experience or empirical evidence.
Symbols are culturally determined and can be misleading e.g. Symbol of God as a shepherd might appear to be meaningless to an urban setting.
Symbols can be superficial, inadequate and inappropriate.
Symbols can become trivialised e.g. The Christian symbol used in jewellery etc.
Symbols are subjective.
Symbols cannot give insight to things beyond human knowledge.
