  • P. Edwards: Symbols do not convey factual information and are therefore meaningless. They cannot be verified using sense experience or empirical evidence.
  • Symbols are culturally determined and can be misleading e.g. Symbol of God as a shepherd might appear to be meaningless to an urban setting.
  • Symbols can be superficial, inadequate and inappropriate.
  • Symbols can become trivialised e.g. The Christian symbol used in jewellery etc.
  • Symbols are subjective.
  • Symbols cannot give insight to things beyond human knowledge.
  • Symbols are only of use to a believer.
