The nature of kingship and succession

• Kings had to be strong, good warriors, pious (very religious) ,chivalric and legitimate
• In the 11th century the Normans introduced primogeniture, that the eldest legitimate son inherits

  the father’s land, including kingship
• Primogeniture was not fully established for the succession of kings in the 12th century
