Royal taxes

• Tallage - compulsory land tax paid by tenants of the royal demesne with no fixed sum that could be increased
• Wardship fines - a tax that returned land to the heir (ward) of a deceased baron when the ward came of age, under John this was increased by 300%
• Forest fines - fines could be claimed for those living, working, hunting or foraging on forest lands
• Scutage - payment made by the holder of a knight’s fee in exchange for not having to fight, under John, 11 scutages were demanded in 16 years
• Thirteenths - developed by John in 1207 set at one shilling at every mark with threats of imprisonment and property seizure for not paying, raising £60000
