Richard’s capture

• In November 1192, Richard was shipwrecked off the northern Adriatic coast
• Richard disguised himself and his companions as pilgrims, but were recognised and Richard was arrested and imprisoned by Leopold of Austria
• In February 1193, Leopold sold Richard to Henry VI, the Holy Roman Emperor
• The ransom was set at 100000 marks (about £66000) with an additional 50000 marks
• The ransom money was to be split between Leopold and Henry, not with Philip, who was concerned about Richard being released too early
