Richard’s return to England

• Richard was released on 4th February 1194 after being in captivity for one year and six weeks
• When he returned, Richard crushed what was left of John’s revolt in Tickhil and Nottingham
• He appointed Hubert Walter as the head of his government in England
• In May, Richard departed to restore control over the Angevin Empire, never to return to England
