By 1213, England was threatened with an invasion by Prince Louis of France and the invasion would not have the blessing of the pope as a holy crusade if John did not submit to him
John sent envoys to Innocent to agree terms
Stephen Langton was allowed to come to England as Archbishop of Canterbury
All the churchmen who fled England were returned to their offices and their property returned
John paid £8000 as an immediate compensation to the pope and £27000 in total
If John broke the agreement, he would lose his right to appoint people to Church offices forever
He promised an annual payment of 1000 marks to the papacy
The interdict was lifted by Stephen Langton in July 1213
