King John’s death

• In September, John moved north to relieve his sheriff at Lincoln castle, which was under siege by rebel forces
• On his return south from Lincoln, he crossed the marshlands of the Wash in East Anglia where his baggage train, including the Crown Jewels, were lost
• He rested at the abbey in Newark and died on the night of 18th October 1216 as he had already been quite ill
