• The membrane consits of a phospholipid bilayer in which proteins are embedded.
• Bilayer means double layer
• The phospholipid bilayer gives the membrane a flexible structure that forms a strong barrier between the inside and the outside of the cell.
• The phospholipid bilayer acts more like a liquid than a solid.
• The lipids and proteins in the membrane move laterally/sideways within the bilayer.
• This constant movement in the bilayer causes the pattern or 'mosaic' of the lipids and proteins to constantly change.
