Function of the Guard cells

• The guard cells control the opening and closing of stomata

• Stomata open for gas exchange for photosynthesis
• When there is an inefficient supply of water to the plant guard cells lose water and become flaccid making the stomata close
• When the plant has an abundant supply of water guard cells become turgid this makes the stomata open for gas exchange for photosynthesis
