Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Interactions

Cards (3)

  • R-groups with only Hydrogen and Carbon are hydrophobic, so in the cell’s aqueous environment, they will orientate away from water and interact together by a weak bond
  • Hydrophilic groups within the molecule are the polar groups, containing oxygen or nitrogen
  • Polypeptide forms its characteristic shape, hydrophobic R-groups inside shielded from the water and hydrophilic groups on the outside so they can interact with water molecules in the cell
