  • External factors are outside of school such as family and status which the school have little control
  • Material factors are social and economic conditions
  • Poverty and home circumstances mean that children from low income families are more likely to:
    • Crowded or damp accommodation
    • Insufficient space and not quiet enough
    • Poor diets and sickness
    • Tiredness and more absence
  • Poorer parents have less access to pre-school and nursery facilities which may affect children's development
  • An education policy that tries to help is 'Sure Start' which aims to help children in disadvantaged areas to go to nursery (not in existent anymore)
  • This also means they may not money for educational books and toys, so may not be available at home.
  • Material Factors tend to be cumulative as many problems relate to one another and build up
  • Poverty and low wages affects lots of these problems as they affect other material factors
  • A poor diet and ill health means that they may have higher levels of sickness meaning they will fall behind in school due to absence
  • There may be a lack of money for hidden costs. Hidden costs are things like school uniform, transport and trips
  • Hidden costs can mean parents cannot afford them or the child has to miss out on opportunities because their family cant afford it.
  • If there is no money for extra curricular activities then the student may feel left out and disconnected from peers who do participate
  • A poor environment may mean it is not a suitable place to work as it may not be clean or quiet enough. This means that they may have to look after their siblings or catch illnesses more often
  • Cost of travel fees may mean that children end up having days off due to the rising cost and can't manage to get there.
  • Working class may prioritize having a part time job as they are able to get paid and then put this above school work and fall behind
