External factors are outside of school such as family and status which the school have littlecontrol
Material factors are social and economic conditions
Poverty and home circumstances mean that children from low income families are more likely to:
Crowded or dampaccommodation
Insufficientspace and not quiet enough
Poor diets and sickness
Tiredness and more absence
Poorer parents have less access to pre-school and nurseryfacilities which may affect children'sdevelopment
An education policy that tries to help is 'SureStart' which aims to help children in disadvantaged areas to go to nursery (not in existent anymore)
This also means they may not money for educational books and toys, so may not be available at home.
Material Factors tend to be cumulative as many problems relate to one another and build up
Poverty and low wages affects lots of these problems as they affect other material factors
A poordiet and illhealth means that they may have higher levels of sickness meaning they will fall behind in school due to absence
There may be a lackofmoney for hiddencosts. Hidden costs are things like school uniform, transport and trips
Hidden costs can mean parents cannot afford them or the child has to miss out on opportunities because their family cant afford it.
If there is no money for extra curricular activities then the student may feel left out and disconnected from peers who do participate
A poorenvironment may mean it is not a suitable place to work as it may not be clean or quiet enough. This means that they may have to look after their siblings or catch illnesses more often
Cost of travelfees may mean that children end up having days off due to the risingcost and can't manage to get there.
Working class may prioritize having a parttime job as they are able to get paid and then put this above schoolwork and fall behind
