types of experiments

Cards (5)

  • laboratory experiments:
research in an artificial setting where researchers manipulate the variables.
  • field experiments:
research that is done in a natural setting where the variables are manipulated.
  • laboratory experiments - AO3:
    -expensive
    -time consuming (to set up)
    -increased validity
    -increased cause and effect
    -good reliability
-small sample size (not good representation)
  • field experiments - AO3:
    -less expensive than lab experiments
-less time consuming to set up
    -cannot see cause and effect
    -larger sample size (good representation)
    -decreased demand characteristics
  • application to education
    -Rosenthal & Jacobson - labelling.
-gave participants a fake IQ test and told the teachers who would do well in school and who would not. Found that the children who were expected to do better did (because treatment changed without realising it did).
    -unethical research
    -only done in one school
