  • athene "endows" telemachus with supernatural grace
  • aegyptius, the father of one of odysseus' men antiphus is the first to speak, questioning who called them here, praising the man who did it
  • telemachus laments about the suitors to the assembly
  • eurymachus defends the suitors, blaming penelope for delaying the marriage by unpicking laertes' funeral shroud
  • penelope's trick is exposed by one of her women
  • penelope is praised by eurymachus, but he says she has misused her wits given to her by athene !! metis
  • telemachus prays to be able to destory the suitors and zeus sends an omen of two eagles clawing at each other
  • halitherses prophecises that odysseus will return to "sow seeds of bloody doom" but eurymachus dismisses him, telling him to run home to his children
  • eurymachus makes his own prophecy, saying that if halitherses incites telemachus to violence he will earn a fine and telemachus will be worse off
  • eurymachus says the suitors will stay until penelope decides
  • telemachus asks for a crew and ship for his journey
  • mentor speaks against the suitors to leocritus' indignation, calls him a "crazy fool" and breaks up the assembly
  • telemachus prays to athene and she appears to him as mentor, chastising him to motivate him to go on his trip
  • telemachus listens, gives a speech to the suitors which angers them and they plot to kill him
  • telemachus tells eurycleia of his plan, asks her to get supplies and not tell penelope
  • athene disguises herself as telemachus and gathers 20 men and a ship, moors the ship, speaks to the men
  • athene then drugs the suitors so they are sleeping when telemachus leaves
  • athene then disguises herself as mentor to go on the ship
