North Slope of Alaska

Cards (9)

  • Trans-Alaska Pipeline system (TAPS) - Artic ocean > Pacific Ocean covering 1,100Km across Alaska
  • Cost $8 billion, 20,000 employees to build, 78,000 refrigerated supports to stop thawing of permafrost
  • 12 billion barrels capacity per day with 35,000 gallons being passed through every minute
  • Dalton highway = 360 miles long and runs across the whole of Alaska (13-hour drive)
  • TAPS should only have a small impact as it only covers 1/1000 of Alaska as the pipe is only 1m wide, and the road is only 10m wide
  • 2 oil rig systems with steerable drill bits to increase efficiency and reduce thawing of permafrost
  • Housing for workers also on stilts > once help 3,000 employees during the oil boom between the 70s - 80s
  • This is all located at Prudhoe bay
  • The oil comes from Alaskan National Petroleum Reserve (NPR)
