Experimental designs

    Cards (7)

    • What happens in an independent group design
Each participant is randomly assigned to a group, which participates in only one condition of the experiment.
    • Strengths of Independent Groups Design (2)
      No order effect
No demand characteristics - it is hard for participants to work out the aim of the study
    • Limitations of independent groups design
Participant variables can affect the DV of the study. Random Allocation must be used so that participant characteristics are equally spread across all the groups.
    • What is Random Allocation
Where participants are randomly assigned a group in independent group designs in an attempt to control participant variables. It means that participant characteristics are more evenly spread across all of the groups.
    • What happens in a repeated measures design
Participants take part in all conditions of the experiment
    • Strengths of Repeated Measures design
Participant variables are controlled as everyone takes part in all conditions of the experiment.
    • Limitations of Repeated Measures Design (2)
      Order Effect
      More demand characteristics
