Ionic

Cards (6)

  • Ionic Bonding is between metals and non-metals
  • After ionic bonding, Both atoms become attracted by electrostatic forces, which takes energy to overcome
  • In Ionic Bonding electrons are transfered between the atoms.
  • In Ionic Bonding, an atom that would need to loose an electron in order to be stable, would transfer an electron to the other atom, that would gain the lost electron, in order to become stable. Once this happens BOTH atoms become ions.
  • Dot and Cross Diagrams show how ionic bonds are formed but not the structure of the compound or size of ions.
  • Ionic compounds form a giant ionic lattice. Which has strong electrostatic forces.
