Energy

Cards (16)

  • Energy is the ability to do work.
  • Energy is also needed to make heat and light.
  • What is chemical energy?

It is the energy stored in foods we eat and oil used to run vehicles and machinery.
  • What is thermal energy?
It is the energy that keeps us warm, produced by hot objects.
  • What is sound energy?
It is the energy that we can hear.
  • What is light energy?
It is the energy that can help us see.
  • What is geothermal energy?
It is the energy found in hot underground rocks.
  • What is kinetic energy?
It is the energy possessed by moving objects.
  • What is Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE)?
It is the energy possessed by an object because of its position above the ground.
  • What is elastic potential energy?
It is the energy possessed by stretched or compressed springs.
  • Energy stores can be stored in different ways, e.g:
    • Kinetic- movement or motion in an object
    • Gravitational- this is due to the position of the object above the ground
    • Elastic- energy already stored in a stretched spring or elastic band
    • Magnetic- energy due to the forces of attraction between two magnets
    • Chemical- energy held in chemical bonds, e.g foods, fuels or batteries
    • Nuclear- energy contained within the nucleus of an atom
    • Thermal- energy due to it's temperature
  • Gravity is a force of attraction between two objects.
  • The principle of conservation of energy states that: Energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can only be transferred from one store to another.
  • Efficiency is defined as the ratio of the useful energy transferred by the device to the total energy supplied to the device.
  • Sankey diagrams are used to represent energy transfer in a system.
