  • Came around in 1859 when parties wanted to overthrow the Conservative minority government
  • Became divided but then in 1998 merged with Social Democrats
  • Factions - Social Liberals want more government to achieve overall societal good without minimising individual freedoms
  • Factions - Economic Liberals are concerned about an overbearing government so want a free market system with low taxes and little government interference
  • Economy - want progressive taxation to improve public services like transport e.g. 2017 campaigned to raise taxes by 1p
  • Economy - want a programme of investing in infrastructure and strengthening participation in the work place
  • Economy - want a green economy
  • Law and order - want more laws and regulations (not Economic Liberals)
  • Welfare - fair distribution of wealth as well as more and better homes
  • Welfare - want social cohesion and equality of opportunity e.g. more grammar schools
  • Welfare - want high quality health and social care
  • Foreign policy - want a Britain open to the world and was anti-Brexit on 2019 manifesto
