Loss of Biodiversity

• The habitats of plant and animal species along the river banks upstream as well as downstream of the dam are adversely affected
• Accumulated water upstream causes habitats to flood and many plant and animal species drown
• Downstream, the river banks dry out and species are lost; opening the dams flood sluices may also destroy remaining species
• The migration routes of fish may be blocked which may also lead to extinction of species
