  Stores, synthesises and process lipids,phospholipids and cholesterol.

  They contains enzymes that detoxify harmful substances. For example, in liver cells, the SER is involved in breaking down carcinogens. Within skeletal muscle cells the SER stores other substances such as calcium ions.
