  • Magnification is the degree by which an object is enlarged.
  • Resolution is the ability of a microscope to distinguish detail.
  • A light microscope is a basic microscope with a maximum magnification of 1500x. Low resolution.
  • An electron microscope is a microscope with a much higher magnification (up to 500 000x) and resolving power than a light microscope. This means that it can be used to study cells in much finer detail.
  • Actual size = image size/magnification
  • magnification = image size/actual size
  • This is the formula of a microscopy
  • What do i do if the cells i am viewing are blurry?
Turn the coarse focusing dial/fine focusing dial
  • What do i do if i want to increase the magnification?
    change the objective lens
  • The image below shows guard cells around open stomata magnified 800 times. The image size of one of the guard cells is 26 millimetres long.
Calculate the real length of the guard cell in micrometres.
    Actual size = image size/magnification
    26/100 = 0.0325mm x 1000
    = 32.5 um
  • What is the difference between a light microscope and an electron microscope?
Electron microscopes provides a higher magnification and resolution but cannot be used to view livings cells. Light microscopes have a lower resolution and low magnification but can use living and dead cells
  • How do you use a light microscope?
    1. Check the microscopes for electrical safety
    2. Click the lowest power objective lense in place
    3. Place a slide on the stage under the objective lens
    4. use the coarse focusing dial to get a focused image
    5. once you have focuses the image, use the fine focusing dial to reveal the detail
    6. repeat 4 and 5 with a higher objective lenses
  • what is the maximum magnification for a light microscope?
    x1500
  • What is the maximum magnification for a electron microscope?
    x500,000
  • What is the resolution for the light and electron microscope?
light is 250nm and electron is 0.25nm
  • A light microscope focuses by glass lenses
  • A electron microscope focuses by electromagnets
  • What is the difference between a light microscope and a electron microscope?
Light microscope is cheap , easy , small and portable but a electron microscope, its expensive , massive , need to be installed in one place and need to be very trained
  • how do you convert cm into mm?
Multiply the number of centimetres by 10.
  • How do you convert mm into micrometres?

  • how do you convert micrometres into namometres?
Multiply the value in micrometers by 1000.
  • how do you convert namometre into micrometres?
    Divide by 1000.
  • how do you convert micrometres to mm?
Divide the number of micrometers by 1000
  • how do you convert mm into centimetres?
Divide the number of millimeters by 10.
  • Number 1 is an eye piece
  • number 2 is an arm
  • number 3 is a rack stop
  • Number 4 is stage clips
  • Number 5 is a Coarse focusing dial
  • Number 6 is a fine focusing dial
  • Number 7 is a Revolving nosepiece
  • Number 8 is Objective lens
  • Number 9 is a stage
  • Number 10 is a condenser
  • Number 11 is an illuminator
  • Number 12 is a base
